BYD Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging

BYD Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging
Posted On By Lease Electric

The world's most advanced power battery and the world's fastest EV charger.

One of the major barriers to widespread EV adoption has always been charging speed. Whilst Range anxiety will continue to fade as batteries improve, charging time still sits at the top of many drivers’ concerns.

But, BYD now believes it has the answer.

The company has unveiled two technologies designed to dramatically change the EV charging experience. The second-generation Blade Battery and a new FLASH Charging system capable of delivering up to 1,500kW through a single connector.

Together, they promise something that until recently sounded unrealistic, recharging an electric car almost as quickly as refuelling a petrol vehicle.

Charging an EV in Five Minutes

BYD’s new system is built around extreme charging speeds.

When paired with the Blade Battery 2.0, the FLASH Charger can take a battery from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. A near-full refill from 10% to 97% takes only nine minutes.

Even in extremely cold conditions, that normally slow EV charging, the new system from BYD performs impressively. At –30°C, the battery can charge from 20% to 97% in around 12 minutes.

Improved Range

BYD says the new Blade Battery 2.0 increases energy density by around 5%, which allows vehicles to travel further on a single charge.

Under China’s CLTC test cycle, ranges of over 1,000 km (around 621 miles) are now possible. While real-world figures will likely be lower, especially in Europe’s WLTP testing, the increase in range is still going to be present.

Inside the Blade Battery 2.0

The Blade Battery was already known for its safety and durability when BYD introduced it in 2020.

The second generation, developed over six years of research, pushes those capabilities further while maintaining the safety advantages of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.

One of the biggest challenges with battery design is balancing fast charging with high energy density. Typically, improving one makes the other worse.

BYD says it has overcome this limitation using what it calls a FlashPass Ion Transport System, built around three key innovations:

  • Flash-Release Cathode: A specially engineered particle structure that allows faster lithium movement while maintaining dense energy storage.
  • Flash-Flow Electrolyte: An AI-optimised electrolyte designed to maximise ionic conductivity and speed up ion mobility.
  • Flash-Intercalate Anode: A multi-dimensional structure that enables high-speed lithium insertion from all directions, allowing faster charging.

Together, these changes reduce internal resistance and heat generation, which are two of the main constraints in ultra-fast charging.

How safe is the BYD Blade Battery 2.0?

Rapid charging often raises questions about battery safety and longevity.

BYD says the Blade Battery 2.0 has passed several demanding safety tests including something unusual: simultaneous FLASH Charging during a nail-penetration test.In that test, the battery showed no thermal runaway, no smoke and no fire, even after 500 flash-charging cycles.

Another extreme scenario involved forcing a short circuit across four battery cells simultaneously. Even at temperatures exceeding 700°C, the battery did not catch fire or explode.

The company also claims 2.5% lower capacity degradation compared with the first-generation Blade Battery.

What is the BYD FLASH Charger?

The second half of the system is BYD’s FLASH Charger, capable of delivering 1,500kW of charging power through a single connector.

That is dramatically higher than today’s fastest public chargers, which typically top out around 350kW.

The charger itself has also been redesigned with practicality in mind. Instead of heavy cables dragging on the ground, the system uses a T-shaped overhead design with a rail-mounted cable, making the connector lighter and easier to handle while keeping it clean and dry.

As of March 2026, the company has already installed 4,239 FLASH Charging stations across China, with plans for 20,000 stations to be installed by the end of 2026.

When will the UK have the BYD FLASH Chargers?

Whilst international expansion is also planned, BYD are yet to confirm when the FLASH Charging network will be deployed globally. There are currently no plans for BYD FLASH charger installations to begin in the UK in the near future.

Will the Grid support the new BYD FLASH Chargers?

Ultra-fast charging requires enormous power, which can place strain on local electricity grids.

BYD’s solution is to pair each FLASH Charging station with an energy storage system.

This system stores electricity in batteries that recharge slowly from the grid, then releases it rapidly when a vehicle connects to the charger.

In effect, it works as both:

  • an energy reservoir
  • a power amplifier

This approach allows extremely high charging power without overloading local grid infrastructure.

What cars will use this new technology?

The first vehicle to launch in Europe with FLASH Charging and Blade Battery 2.0 will be the DENZA Z9GT.

The Z9GT is a high-performance electric shooting-brake from BYD’s premium Denza brand, and it will act as the technology’s flagship when it arrives in Europe.

Final European specifications are expected soon.
