The term 'climate positive' also referred to as 'carbon negative', means that the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and greenhouse gases (GHG) in the world are reduced as a result of an action or organisation i.e. the net effect is removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere rather than adding it.
Every time we lease a car or van we invest in Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Gold Standard carbon reduction projects to compensate for the carbon created by the vehicle manufacturer, such as preserving the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor in Guatemala.
Through our partners at Ecologi, we offset more CO2e emissions than are generated through the production process of a vehicle and its battery, which on average is around 15-20 tonnes, although this can depend on the manufacturer and carbon density of the electricity network at the manufacturing plant. As an example, the carbon life cycle assessment of the Mercedes-Benz EQC demonstrates that 16.4 tonnes of carbon are created by the time the vehicle rolls off the production line.
Through our partners at Ecologi, every time we lease a car or van we plant 100 trees in the Fleet Electric Forest. Each individual tree removes ~0.3083 tonnes of CO2e over a 25-year lifespan equating to roughly 30 tonnes of CO2 being removed from the earth's atmosphere. This is enough CO2 to cover twice the amount of carbon emissions emitted over an electric vehicle's lifetime. If you charge your electric vehicle with renewable energy then all 30 tonnes will be climate positive.
Once your vehicle has been delivered, we will send you a link to your spinney of trees in the Fleet Electric forest so you can watch them grow.
One and a half acres of forest are cut down every second, so we do everything we can to reduce the amount of wood and timber-based products we use to reduce our impact on the world. Our vehicle quoting and ordering process is 100% digital, so no trees are harmed in the processing of your order. We also substitute seed paper where normal paper cannot be avoided, such as our business cards which will grow into wildflowers once they are finished with.
With our recommended chargepoint supplier, Pod Point, our customers will be given the opportunity to switch their residential energy tariff onto one of the EDF Energy GoElectric zero-carbon tariffs. All the GoElectric tariffs provide 100% renewable electricity and are available either as a single rate tariff or two different off-peak tariffs, with overnight electricity rates as low as 4.5p per Kilowatt-hour (kWh).
